The original Venetian masks worn during the Carnival celebrations of the 11th century were simple in design but with very striking designs. They were usually black or white and were teamed up with a long cloak and tri corn hats to conceal the identity of the wearer so they could cavort and fully participate in the gaiety of the carnival without fear of recognition or consequences. .Since these times the design of the masks have remained much the same with the decoration becoming far more lavish. Within this group you will find the Bauta mask, the moreto and the Volto mask.
